Intonation.

The voice does not stay level. It rises and falls across a phrase, and that shape carries meaning of its own. Print offers two marks for it, both at the end of the sentence.

The shape of the voice

Stress is about which syllable carries the beat. Rhythm is the pattern those beats make. Phrasing is where the groups break. Intonation is the pitch shape laid over a group — the melody, in the sense the word is usually meant.

It can carry a whole utterance on its own. Read these three aloud:

Oh.  ·  Oh?  ·  Oh!

  • Oh.

  • Oh?

  • Oh!

Two letters, three meanings. The first falls and closes: something has been taken in. The second rises: a request for more. The third jumps to a peak and drops away: surprise. Nothing about the letters changed, and there is no syllable to stress differently — the pitch contour is doing all of the work. The lines above sketch each shape; they are an illustration, not a proposed way of marking pitch in print.

Because a single word can be given several contours, intonation is the one component of prosody that can operate with the words held completely constant.

Print marks the end, not the shape

English gives intonation a narrow orthographic channel: a question mark and an exclamation mark, both arriving after the fact, at the boundary. They report what kind of utterance the sentence was. They do not describe the voice.

Same four words, same order, no change in grammar — there is no inversion here, no are you. The second reads as a question because the mark signals one, and because the reader supplies a contour to match.

Even that mapping is loose. Many wh-questions fall rather than rise, so a question mark does not reliably mean a rise. Statements sometimes rise. And the contours that mark doubt, irony, encouragement, or reservation have no punctuation at all. A reader who wants them has to infer them from the words and the situation.

Punctuation is nonetheless the place where print and prosody meet most directly, and readers’ awareness of it appears to matter: sensitivity to punctuation has been proposed as a link between prosodic awareness and reading comprehension (Ryken, Wade-Woolley, & Deacon, 2025). What intonation does

Three jobs are worth separating.

It marks what kind of utterance this is. Question, statement, command, exclamation — often signalled by contour before the grammar makes it clear, and sometimes instead of the grammar.

It goes where the news is. The main pitch movement of a phrase is carried by its focused word, which is why moving the emphasis changes the melody as well as the meaning — the subject of the Emphasis and focus page.

It carries attitude. Doubt, warmth, sarcasm, and surprise ride on pitch more than on word choice. This is the part print loses most completely, and the reason a message read on a screen can be taken the wrong way.

Intonation also interacts with grouping: pitch tends to reset at a phrase boundary, so where a reader breaks a sentence changes the contours on either side. The four forms work alongside one another rather than stacking in sequence:

Words, syntax, and punctuation come from the page; context and prior knowledge from the reader. Focus is not a fifth form but a question the others answer: which word receives the prominence they carry.

What the research shows

Reading prosody and reading comprehension are related. A meta-analysis of the literature found a reliable association across studies (Wolters, Kim, & Szura, 2022), and prosodic sensitivity has been linked to reading ability at many points in development: in children learning to read (Whalley & Hansen, 2006; Clin, Wade-Woolley, & Heggie, 2009; Holliman, Wood, & Sheehy, 2010), in the development of reading prosody through the early grades (Miller & Schwanenflugel, 2008), among poor comprehenders (Groen, Veenendaal, & Verhoeven, 2019), and in developmental dyslexia, where a recent meta-analysis reports a consistent prosodic deficit (Mundy & Wood, 2025). Prosodic competence has been argued to be a missing component in accounts of reading across languages (Wade-Woolley, Wood, Chan, & Weidman, 2022).

What this literature does not show

Six limits are worth stating plainly, because they bound what can be claimed for intonation in particular.

Most of it is not about intonation. Prosodic sensitivity is usually measured with tasks about stress and timing — which syllable is emphasized, whether two patterns match. Intonation is often folded into a composite score or left out. Evidence that “prosody” relates to reading is not by itself evidence about pitch.

The pitch-specific evidence is thinner than the timing evidence. When good and poor high-school comprehenders were compared on prosodic production, they differed in how they used duration to cue syntactic structure, but a corresponding difference in fundamental-frequency cues did not emerge, though such differences have been reported in younger children (Breen et al., 2016; Breen et al., 2024). This is the one place where the literature is specifically about pitch, and it is equivocal.

It is largely correlational. Readers with better prosodic sensitivity tend to comprehend better. Which way the influence runs, or whether a third factor drives both, is not settled by these designs.

It is largely about children, and largely about reading aloud. Oral reading is where prosody can be measured directly. That prosodic information is active during silent reading has been argued from indirect evidence (Gross, Millett, Bartek, Bredell, & Winegard, 2014), but that evidence concerns prosody broadly rather than intonation in particular — the subject of implicit prosody. Adult readers are studied less often than developing ones.

Measurement is the field’s weak point. Prosodic tasks frequently show modest internal consistency, which adds noise to every estimate and makes any single correlation less precise. This is a general problem rather than a fault of particular studies.

No published training study has targeted intonation. The training work from this project used stress and rhythm markers together (Gross, Roldan, Kiessel, Esselink, & Dunlap, 2026). Whether intonation sensitivity can be trained in adult readers, and whether doing so would touch reading itself, has not been tested here.

Can intonation be put into print?

The question is older than this site. Several groups have tried augmenting text with visual cues to pitch and timing — typographic and graphical marks intended to make a contour visible on the page. The approach has been shown to be feasible, and to support more expressive reading aloud, including for deaf readers (Patel & McNab, 2011; Patel, Kember, & Natale, 2014; Renckens et al., 2021).

Two things follow, and they pull in opposite directions. Intonation can be displayed — the engineering is not the obstacle. But the demonstrated benefit is for reading aloud, where the reader is producing the contour. Whether a visible contour helps silent reading, and whether it helps a reader who is not being asked to perform, is an open question rather than a settled one.

That is why this page ends differently from the others.

Try it

The tools on this site do not yet display intonation. Stress, rhythm, and phrase structure all have marks that can sit in a line of text; pitch does not, and inventing one would mean teaching a convention no reader has met before. An intonation tool is planned.

What you can do in the meantime is work on the layer underneath. Rhythm Reader Pro shows phrase structure and marks the main accent of each phrase. Since pitch resets at phrase boundaries and the largest pitch movement falls on the main accent, moving a boundary in the tool changes where the contours of a sentence would begin and end. It is the skeleton the melody hangs on.
